Ice Storm 2009

Monday and Tuesday we were hit by an ice storm. Everything was covered with ice! It was beautiful to look at but devastating to the trees and power lines. By Tuesday night our electricity was off which meant no heat and no septic tank pump which meant no shower or toilet privileges (not fun). We heard on the radio that it would probably be 72 hours or more for the electricity to be restored. All night Tuesday we listened to trees falling and limbs breaking, it was pretty scary. In some areas, it looked like a tornado had gone through with huge trees totally uprooted. Thousands of power line poles were broken and towns all over Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri were completely dark. We spent the next three days trying to keep warm and trying to entertain the boys - there are only so many board games you can play (soon after the lights went out Kannon ran upstairs and came down with a stack of board games). We did go up to Barry's school and play in the gym each afternoon. Enough sunlight came through the lobby to light up the court enough to play ball. It was cold enough outside that we just put all of our freezer and frig. food in coolers out on the back porch. Barry cooked on our grill and we actually ate pretty good during our black-out. Finally Friday night (almost exactly 72 hours) we got power back on! What a happy time! The first thing Kannon said was, "Now we can stop playing those board games" - he is a funny kid. The first thing I did was vacuum my house and start a load of laundry - it was wonderful. Corey ran quickly up to his room to play video games and everyone else just enjoyed the HEAT :) That morning when we woke up it was 43 degrees - in the house. I don't know if I could have taken another night. But we made it through and we learned a lot about being better prepared. We had plenty of food, water, batteries, etc... but you have to have a heat source. We are now proud owners of a generator. :)

Right where that huge limb is sticking up is where Barry always parks his truck. Thankfully he decided to move it from under the tree the night before. I think he would have had a new sun roof.

Playing in the gym each afternoon not only passed some time but also warmed us all up.

Thursday night we cooked at home but then took it up to Barry's school to eat it. It was about 15 degrees warmer there for some reason. So here we are eating dinner in the Teacher's Lounge. Hey, you do what you have to do to survive.

This face pretty much sums up how all of us were beginning to feel by the third night. Poor kid. I was very proud of my boys though for never complaining or whining throughout the whole experience. They did great.

Saturday was warm and sunny so we all got out and started the yard clean up. We are going to have quite the big bon fire!

Sunday we just had Sacrament meeting and then we were organized into teams and went out to clear yards. We worked all afternoon and completed our work order of six yards. The men used chainsaws to cut up the big trees and the rest of us hauled everything to the curb. It is amazing what you can do with a big group of people. Even Kannon got in there and picked up sticks and branches.

Even though this was a tough week, Barry and I both thought how great it was to have so much family time. Even Dustin hung out with us all week. We have learned a lot about being prepared and enjoyed the chance to serve others. Many times good things come from our trials. We are thankful to be safe and so grateful to have electricity.

Basketball Homecoming

Friday night was another exciting Valley View basketball game. The game went into overtime with Valley View finally coming out ahead 93-89. One of the Valley View players hit 8 three pointers which was awesome. It was Homecoming so the gym was packed with screaming fans. Quite a fun atmosphere - especially since we won.

Another newspaper picture

After the game, Dustin came home and changed for the Homecoming Dance. He went with his friend Amy who is also a basketball player. When the dance was over, they all headed to IHOP for a really late dinner or maybe an early breakfast.

During the school day Friday, they had homecoming activities all day. They played games and had class and individual competitions. I heard from about five different people what an awesome Dodge Ball player that Dustin is - I think he won the whole tournament. It doesn't matter what Dustin is playing he plays to win and is always very competitive. I am glad that Homecoming turned out to be such a great day!

In the News

Valley View had a big conference game the other night against cross town rival Westside. To make it even more of a rival that is where Dustin went to school until last year. Westside is really good this year so I was hoping that it would be at least a close game. Well, Valley View came out on fire. They ended up beating Westside by 20 points. What an exciting game!

The next morning we were surprised to see Dustin's picture on the front page of the sports section. There also was the nicest comment quoted by Westside's coach about Dustin: "I know they have a lot of guys that can shoot the ball, but you better tip your hat to Dustin Jones. He is just a tremendous player and is the engine of their train. He makes them what they are, gets them the ball when they need it, and is just a tremendous player."

We are very proud of Dustin, he plays hard and is a great team player.

For the Birds

Corey, Tanner, Kannon and I had a fun afternoon at the Nature Center last Saturday. Besides all the regular stuff to do there, they also were having a special Bird presentation. They talked about the different birds that we might see in our yard during the winter and then the kids got to make a "Bird Feeder Garland". Bascially the kids strung nuts, bread, dried fruit and popcorn on a piece of yarn to hang in a tree. As we were stringing prunes, dried apricots, apple slices and nuts I commented that I thought the birds were really going to like this. One of the boys said, "I think Papa would really like it." That cracked me up. If you know my dad it did look like a perfect treat for him.

The boys were anxious to get home and have dad hang their garland up. We will see how much the birds love them.

Talking about birds, we also had a bird day at Preschool - O is for Owl. We made an owl puppet and the kids had fun being "asleep" when the lights were on and then waking up and "Hooting" when I turned the lights off. To go along with the O day we also ate oranges and played an Opposites game. Preschool is so fun!

Best of 2008

I love starting a new year. I also love looking back over the past year. For Family Home Evening last night, we talked about 2008 and some of the fun things we got to do and some of the family and friends we were able to visit. Then we played "2008 Bingo" I don't think Kannon ever had a chance to Bingo because he kept eating his popcorn markers :)

Then everyone shared one of their favorite things about the year 2008:

Barry: Watching Dustin play baseball in the American Legion World Series in Shelby, NC

Corey: Spending a couple of days with Arie (He is my cousin, Carol's son who came to visit for the first time from Switzerland - they played video games, went out on the boat, shot off fireworks, and spent a day together at White Water

Tanner: Playing another season of Machine Pitch Baseball

Kannon: Spending a day at White Water and going down almost every slide

Dustin: Winning the High School State Baseball Championship and going to the American Legion World Series

These are the Valley View guys who played together for both State Championships - Dustin is on the far left

Me: Having the chance to visit with family and friends that don't live here in Arkansas

I am grateful that we all were healthy and safe and were able to spend so much time together as a family. Best Wishes for a GREAT 2009!
